In addition to plenary presentations, concurrent presentations, panels, workshops, and field trips, the GNSI conference also offers a variety of events throughout the week. These events are included in your registration fee, so don't miss out the exciting opportunities to network and learn something new.

  • Board Meeting - Annual Meeting of the national board of directors
  • Portfolio sharing and reception - meet colleagues, share your work and stories
  • Members art exhibit with reception - see the best of peers’ work in this juried show
  • Chapters Meeting Lunch - Chapter representatives meet with our Membership Director
  • Auction - bid on artwork, media, materials (and more) to help the Guild’s education fund
  • Business meeting - hear Board reports and participate in Guild business
  • Banquet – taste the local cuisine and socialize

Portfolio Sharing (Sunday)

Sunday, July 15th, 7:00PM – 10:00PM, Constitution Hall at American University (AU)

Our portfolio sharing event is a great low-key evening to show your stuff, admire the work of other natural science illustrators, and swap advice over drinks and hors d’oeuvres. Bring a selection of your favorite prints or originals and prepare to talk shop!

Chapter Meetings Lunch (Monday)

Monday, July 16th, 12:00pm - 1:00PM, Mary Graydon Center’s Terrace Dining Services Area (AU)

An informal meeting of the Chapter/Group representatives and the Membership Director is held during the annual conference at lunch so Chapter/Group representatives can meet, discuss any issues and share ideas. In addition, Chapter/Group representatives are introduced at the Member’s Meeting. Chapters/Groups are encouraged to designate a proxy representative if no one from the Chapter or Group will be attending the conference.

50th Anniversary Juried Exhibition Opening Reception (Monday)

Monday, July 16th, 7:00PM – 9:00PM, American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Art Gallery, 1200 New York Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20005

The Exhibit highlights the beauty and technical expertise of our members. During the Exhibit Reception at this downtown Washington DC’s prestigious gallery, public invitees and members mingle to admire the works of their colleagues. This year’s exhibit celebrates GNSI’s 50th Anniversary with four categories of subjects in a variety of media of the best jury-selected works submitted by members. Light refreshments and drinks are served at this event.

The Members Business Lunch (Tuesday)

Tuesday, July 17th, 12:00PM - 1:30PM, Mary Graydon Center, Rooms 2-5, Main Level (AU)

The Business Meeting is a great time to catch up with all that the Guild has been working on throughout the year, including reports from board members. Items will be presented for members to vote on/protest against. In addition, there will be a short session after the Business Meeting to help members get more involved in the Guild called “Working with the Guild” from 1:30 to 3 PM in the same location.

Annual Auction (Tuesday)

Tuesday, July 17th, 7:00PM – 10:00PM, Constitution Hall (AU)

The annual GNSI Conference Auction needs your stuff! Please send (or bring) your artsy, scientific, bookish, rare prints and rare art supplies, or oddball items for attendees to bid on Tuesday evening of the conference.Dig around in your closets and studios, or even better, create something original to donate to the GNSI Annual Auction.Auction items truly run the gamut, and the surprise is part of the fun (along with the identity of our mystery auctioneers).

The auction is an important part of GNSI fundraising, with proceeds split evenly between the GNSI General Fund and Education Fund. Your donations help to keep the organization afloat and support educational initiatives for natural science illustrators. You can bring your marvelous donations to the registration desk during the conference, because of course! You ARE coming! Even if you are not attending the auction, you can still support GNSI by shipping your auction items.

Annual Awards Banquet (Wednesday)

Wednesday, July 18th, 7:00PM – 10:00PM, Claudio Grossman Hall, College of Law (AU)

This year’s Awards Banquet will be held in American University’s School of Law Claudio Grossman Hall, an elegant space for recognizing our member’s outstanding contributions to GNSI. Our featured speaker is Scott Rawlins, who will help us celebrate our 50th Anniversary with a dinner address about GNSI’s 50 year history. He will be highlighting a few of the individuals who have played an important role in establishing the organization and helping to insure that it remains a viable entity, reflecting both the traditions of medieval craft guilds and opportunities associated with a 21st century technological society.

Drum Circle (Thursday)

Thursday, July 19, 2018 7:00PM - 11:00PM, Amphitheater (AU)

Thursday evening of the conference will bring back the Drum Circle, a popular event at our Asheville, NC conference which is relaxing and at the same time energizing. Please come get in sync with your inner circadian self at the American University Amphitheater, where you can get rhythm if you don’t have it, or show your chops with multiple drum choices and other percussion instruments made available to help all get into a groove like only artist nerds can do. Refreshments are included.
