Welcome to the 50th Anniversary Celebration and Conference for the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators July 15 - 21, 2018!

Arrival: When arriving at American University (AU) East Campus (GPS: 3501 NEBRASKA AVE., Washington, DC), drive into the East Campus Commons through the covered driveway entrance from Nebraska Avenue. Self-Parking is on your left, and taxis may drop passengers and luggage along the curb before circling back onto Nebraska Avenue. Look for university “Welcome” flags and GNSI signs directing you to Registration in Constitution Hall Lobby.



CHECK-IN & REGISTRATION

GNSI Conference Packet Pickup: Constitution Residence Hall Lobby 8:00 am - 4:45 pm, Sunday-Saturday

GNSI Conference packets, room assignment, schedule of events, maps and other material for the conference week will be distributed at the Registration and Check-in area inside Constitution Hall Lobby all week.

Room check-in begins at 4pm on Saturday, July 14 inside Constitution Residence Hall. Pre-registered guests will proceed to the dormitory reception desk to activate their personal, secure Guest Key Card for room check-in. Conference attendees must present a photo ID to the desk attendant to receive an AU Guest Key Card. Pre-paid overnight stays and meals are coded onto each Guest Key Card, and are required to access secured Residence hall doors and elevators, and for meal service in the Terrace Dining Room.

GNSI Registration is open daily from 8:00am - 4:45pm in Constitution Hall and will be attended by University Staff 24 hours a day for housing check-in on any day. If you arrive later than 4:45pm, you can present your photo ID and get your Summer Guest Key Card for room access from the Residence Hall Desk Attendant, then pick up your registration packet the next morning when the GNSI Registration desk is open.

Your unique Guest Key Card can also store a nominal cash value, known as EagleBucks. This is a cashless debit card feature of AU’s Guest Key Card. You can add value to the card in the designated EagleBucks machine in Mary Graydon Center on the main floor. ALL LAUNDRY MACHINES cost $1.75 per load and require EagleBucks. High-speed WIFI is available all over campus but is unsecured.Link to “AUGuest-byRCN” (and no password is required.) Ethernet is available in dorm rooms only so bring your own ethernet cable.


PARKING & SHUTTLE SERVICES

Cars and taxis may only park on the surface lot adjacent to Constitution Hall. No other long-term parking is permitted for conference guests anywhere else on campus. If you or your guests wish to have parking for more than one day, you may reserve and pay the daily rate for the duration of the week through AU’s Parking and Transportation website: https://american.t2hosted.com/Account/Portal

Please note: Parking is $2.00/hour or $16.00/daily max. Monday-Friday 9am-5pm (Free after 5pm M-F or on the weekends.) Please watch the monitors in various buildings for traffic and transportation updates in and around campus.

AMERICAN UNIVERSITY FREE SHUTTLES run between the campus and Tenleytown Metro Station daily, with special summer, weekend and evening schedules.

Safe and efficient charter bus service will be provided by GNSI to and from the off-campus Conference Activities for Monday night’s Exhibition opening at AAAS and for Wednesday’s trip to the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Seats are reserved for pre-registered conference guests only; please check in at the Registration table for more information.


DINING

Pre-paid meals will be served in The Terrace Dining Room inside Mary Graydon Center on the Main Campus, across Nebraska Avenue from Constitution Hall. A variety of self-serve and buffet options, including Vegan, Kosher and Gluten-free, are offered during the following hours:

Breakfast 7:00am-8:30am

Lunch 12:00am-1:00pm

Dinner 5:00pm-6:30pm

NOTE: Day registration and off-campus conferees and guests will receive “Blue” meal cards validating pre-paid meals for the Terrace Dining Room. You must present the Blue meal card or Guest Key Card for entrance at each meal or pay the full rates for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

A few campus stores sell snacks, coffee and other necessities on main campus.Hours of operation vary; all accept major credit cards or EagleBucks.

Local amenities: Rite-Aid Pharmacy, Starbucks, Wagshal’s Delicatessen, Ace Beverage and several upscale restaurants are just steps away in Foxhall Square Mall at 3301 New Mexico Avenue.Le Pain Quotidien, Millie’s, Tara Thai, Starbucks, another Wagshal’s Deli, CVS Pharmacy, Exxon Service station and Wells Fargo Bank are located at 4855 Massachusetts Avenue in the Spring Valley Shopping Center (terminus for AU Red Shuttle), ~ 1.0 mile north of Ward Circle.


CHECK-OUT

All guests must sign out and return their Guest Key Cards prior to their final departure with University staff at the front desk of Constitution Hall. Key cards not returned at check-out are the responsibility of the individual attendee. Lost or unreturned cards are charged $150, and any remaining cash value, meal credits and “Eagle Bucks” are forfeited to AU. Residence Hall check-out requires that you leave the room linens, pillow and all other furnishings as you found them in the room, and the door should be locked.

Final check out time is Sunday, July 22, 2018 at noon.


MISCELLANEOUS

Carry sunscreen, hats, mosquito repellant, umbrella or rain gear for typically hot July weather and possible thunderstorms. A backpack or lightweight bag can be useful.

Fitness & Pool Facilities: Ask for a waiver and information about fitness facilities and hours of operation at the Residence Hall check-in.

Portfolio Sharing commences Sunday night at 6pm in Rooms 1-3 on the ground floor of the East Campus Commons Meeting Space in Constitution Hall. Please bring your portfolio materials anytime after 6pm to find a spot and catch up with old and new GNSI friends. Light refreshments will be served.
